The Cinema Club has started

The last Film Club gathering was held yesterday 4th September at Контора co-working space where a group of about 50 people could enjoy the chosen film and participate in the discussion held afterwards. The event exceeded all our expectations. Even if we had to overcome some minor technical difficulties, we must say it was a great success!

At the beginning of summer Opora started a new activity for young people in Yoshkar-Ola, named Kino-klub where we project films in original version with Russian subtitles. The event, organized by the volunteers of Opora, has been organized three times so far. We have already seen a French film Ernest & Celestine, the German film The Wave, and a Mexican-American drama The Golden Dream. Each film was followed by a discussion game which allowed the participants to exchange impressions about the film and debate about its themes.

Although the club was already great, we have tried to go a step further. One of our innovations was to enable the film to be selected using an online voting system. Using this method, the film V for Vendetta was chosen. This dystopian political thriller is set in an alternative future where a Nordic supremacist and neo-fascist regime has subjugated the United KingdomApart from this change, from now on, we will choose films related to specific events and dates. Our topic yesterday was democracy, which is celebrated on September 15th.

“I have just arrived in Yoshkar-Ola and it is nice to see that these types of cultural initiatives have such a great acceptance. I really liked the film chosen; it presents very interesting topics for discussion and it is also very entertaining. Although due to linguistic limitations I was not able to get involved in the game, I had the feeling that the discussions held were very interesting. I am looking forward to the next film.”

Sara

“In my opinion, yesterday’s event went really well. It gave young people the opportunity to shape their views on the issue of democracy and human rights. From an organizational point of view, we will strive to learn from the experience for the next film screenings.”

We would like to thank the Italian volunteer Giuseppe for all his hard work and dedication without which this screening wouldn’t have been possible.
